Biography
Ms. Debbie is in her second year at Oak Crest, bringing with her more than a decade of professional experience as an insurance agent and broker. During her career, she also served as a corporate trainer for United Healthcare, where she developed skills in leadership, communication, and professional development.
Her transition into education began in 2023 when she worked as a substitute teacher at the secondary level. In 2024, she became a full-time teacher at Oak Crest, where her organizational skills and passion for planning enrich her classroom environment. She is dedicated to fostering student independence and engagement through thoughtfully designed lessons and a love for self-paced learning.
Outside of teaching, Ms. Debbie enjoys spending time with her family as a devoted nana, tending to her garden, playing tennis, and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.
What is your favorite thing about Oak Crest?
My favorite thing about Oak Crest is the educational philosophy. This is a philosophy I adopted in 2001, but I never knew anyone who believed in self-paced education as strongly as I did. Fast forward to 2024, my search for a teaching position led to many schools, but none shared the same belief in self-paced learning. When it’s right, you know it!
Favorite Books:
Go For No! by Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz
Good to Great by Jim Collins
Childhood favorites: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Favorite subject in school:
My favorite subject in school was English. I was blessed to have a teacher who loved teaching, cared for students, and had a passion for grammar. My love for grammar comes from her and what she instilled in me. It was one of the greatest experiences of my childhood.
