English Language Arts
Junior School, Form 3 and 4 (Fourth through sixth grade)
Reading instruction transitions to a literature-based program. Students have an hour of supervised daily reading. Study guides are followed to complete reading assignments of one to two books a week with essays, discussions and research. Reading guides are designed in a way that improves the student’s literacy, vocabulary and fosters a love of reading. Materials include fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, history and biographies, and are carefully selected to showcase and celebrate various cultures and times in history. Each semester, students participate in a group literature seminar to share observations and conclusions regarding the selected book. This includes historical context, the author’s purpose in writing the book, and the many types and uses of literary devices. Group lessons and independent courses further expand a student’s knowledge of grammar and composition and help to build a student’s learning independence by introducing dictionary skills. Weekly writing seminars allow students to learn narrative, descriptive, persuasive and expository writing and give them the opportunity to showcase their poems, letters, essays and articles.
