Teachers regularly deliver seminars teaching a non-religious moral code based on common sense called The Way to Happiness. Copies of this booklet are available for free from the school. It teaches rules like “Honor and Help Your Parents,” “Set a Good Example” and “Respect the Religious Beliefs of Others.”
Before a child ever gets in trouble for misbehavior, he is taught, for example, “Try Not to Do Things to Others That You Would Not Like Them to Do to You.” Then, if the child violates this at a later point in time, he or she can be reminded of the earlier lesson and how it applies to the current situation. This allows a child to learn how to handle his environment with increasingly good judgment. Correction of behavior is not based on the arbitrary whim of an adult, but rather on a known set of moral guidelines that make sense and have been taught before any non-optimum situation arises.
This approach to character education makes the school a very safe environment. Students know what is expected of them. Bullying does not exist. Generally children treat each other with great kindness.
